Effective Public Speaking
The Essential Points of Effective Public Speaking
Public speaking is certainly an art. An art of speaking effectively and presenting ones points. Not all people are equipped to present their art in front of a roomful of people. It is not only about speaking but speaking effectively enough to have an impact.
One needs to follow some steps for effective public speaking. Standing on the dais or in front of a conference table doesn’t equip you enough to do the same. You may be superior to others in what you do, or simply may be a master in your trade; big enough to voice your opinion in front of people, but it may all fall flat if you aren’t effective enough. It is just not about knowing what to speak. There is more to effective public speaking than meets the eye. Here are a few effective and infallible tips:
Make sure your content makes sense: In spite of a good presentation, the underlining truth is that the matter has to make sense and you have to have enough belief in it. It is not just reading out from penned down lines. It is necessary to be able to know what you are talking about and take it a step further when asked questions. It is necessary to speak on the topic and not make up things which will make your audience lose interest. Remember most of them are there because they are interested in the topic or the subject in question. It is necessary to be respectful of the ‘time’ factor and spread out your presentation accordingly. The trick is not to speak too much or too little. They both can go against you. Be precise if you want to be an effective public speaker. When you are into making a speech or talking on a topic, you need to start right from the word ‘go’. Try and capture the attention of the audience right from the introduction. Its helps!
Voice modulation and expressions: Imagine being a part of an audience and listening to a speaker talking with a dead pan expression and a monotone. Even if you have had a fitful sleep the night before, it is certain to make you fall off to sleep again. With that said, as a speaker you need to be able to express yourself with emotions. If you bring humor into your speech, saying everything with a dead pan expression will fall flat. A smile, a laugh helps to express yourself. If you need to be serious, by all means add a tone of seriousness to your voice. In short it helps to be expressive. While you add expression it helps to stand at a position where you can see your audience. Also, look them in the eye and say that which needs to be said. Make the dais your place on earth, walk around feel free and express. Freeing yourself from the fear also helps to make a good expression.
Know your subject well: This is a very important factor. If you are confident about what you speak it would come naturally to you. Throw your voice like you would when speaking to yourself. It perhaps is understandable that your audience is literate and can read from the presentation papers or a slide show. But you need to take a step further and know more than that. Read and study before you make a presentation. Know you matter well and be prepared for questions.
These simple steps will help you to effectively speak in public. Take one step at a time and sure enough you will make a difference with your speech.
