Overcome your Fear of Public Speaking

So do you feel your hands shaking, fingers go numb, knees turn jelly and beads of perspiration on your forehead? Do you have this feeling of being pushed into the deep blue seas with your limbs tied? Do you feel the fear of the unknown when groping in the dark? And all this when asked to address the public or face an audience! Rather, more aptly, speaking to a sea of audience staring at you as if you were the messiah and, about to cast a spell. Yes, a spell with your speech. But the reality is that most of us suffer from fear of public speaking.

Fear of Public SpeakingIt is true that we speak to millions of people – known and unknown – throughout the day. Irrespective of the media, in person, via the phone, voice chat or video chat, we do speak, and fluently at that. So why do we simply suffer from the fear of public speaking when asked to address an unknown audience or a roomful of people? Is it just our self-esteem that we question or the fear of being laughed at, or just not understood in the right context? It is almost like we question our confidence and our self-presence which manifests itself as public speaking fear.

Most of us fear to take that one step that perhaps would set us apart. What we do not realize is the fact that most of our fears are self-generated and created. It is something that is within us, and in turn makes us react differently while in public. When asked to speak out in public, we start to stammer, stutter, mumble and fumble. With this fear of public speaking we dig our own grave and portray to the world a different image of ourselves – something which we are really not. Rather we come across as a person who we in our very own thoughts loathe. So, we create our very own negative image unconsciously by our very own fear of speaking in public.
From the view of the public, what you present or bring to dais makes sense enough. But your public speaking fear is construed as a no-confidence issue and gets construed in a different light. It is seen as someone who is lending his or her voice to something without any confidence and belief in the matter. In short, merely a case of lip service! Even though what you bring to the table is valuable, it is your motions and gestures that makes a world of difference. Like every great marketer feels, ‘market what you will with confidence and you will make it big one day’.

Public speaking is an art. It is an art to express yourself and show that you believe in what you present. You can overcome your public speaking fear by your presence, making sure you get the attention of your audience write from the word ‘go’. The name of the game is also about being precise and brief. The more elaborate and lengthy you are, the more the possibility of being faced with yawns and sighs. At the end of the day it is important to make them relate or be a part of what you are telling them. Of course, the age old process of breath-in and breath-out will bring in the much need confidence and help overcome the fear of public speaking.
